Accommodations at the Glendalough hotel next to the twin lakes and monastery remains.

Thurs. 15 Sept: Retreat day at Glendalough with Fr. Michael Rodgers. This day will include walking meditation in the Monastic Village and to the Upper Lake. Fri 16 Sept: Today we depart for Kildare to meet with Sr. Mary and the Brigidine sisters. We will have an opportunity to visit the cathedral and grounds which contain St. Brigid’s firehouse and a Round Tower. After lunch we will travel by coach to St Brigid’s well: This well is reputedly a ‘healing well’, one of many in Ireland where healing liturgies are often held. See www.solasbhride.ie

Sat 17 Sept: Morning gathering and presentation on the Celts. Afternoon free to explore more of Glendalough, walk on the Green Road to the Woolen Mill for bargains in Celtic sweaters, or enjoy a cream tea.

Sun 18 Sept: early departure from Glendalough to head west to the Aran Islands. On the way we visit Clonmacnoise, one of Ireland’s most important Christian sites where a monastery was founded by St. Ciaran in the mid-6th century on the eastern bank of the River Shannon. After lunch, we will head on to Rossaveal port and on by ferry to Inis mor. Overnight accommodation will be at Ard Einne guesthouse

Mon 19 Sept: Our first day on Inis Mor will be hosted by Deidre Ni Chinneide who will lead us in reflections on Celtic tradition and introduce us to some of the important sites on the island. From the Guest House overlooking the ocean we can see the remains of St. Enda’s church where the first monastery was founded in Ireland. We will visit Dun Aengus, churches and forts, some dating back to 2,000 BCE.

Tues  20 Sept: A Free day to Explore Inis mor.  Time to visit the port and local shops, take a bike ride, walk on the beach or hire a pony and trap for a journey along the small roadways.

Wed 21 Sept: Return by ferry to the mainland and visit Galway City. Overnight will be in Doolin with an opportunity to enjoy Irish music in the bar or local pub.

Thur 22 Sept: Visit the Burren taking in the extraordinary otherworldly landscape of the region. Carved by nature from bare carboniferous limestone, the view manages to be both desolate and beautiful. We will also visit Poulnabrone. This old portal tomb is an exquisitely preserved prehistoric site. Its dolmen (or stone table) is huge, and dates back over 5,000 years.

Fri  23rd Sept: Today we travel through scenic Connemara and on to Downpatrick Head in Co., Mayo.  The name Downpatrick Head is derived from a time when St. Patrick himself founded a church here. The ruins of the church, a stone cross and Holy Well remain and the coastline is spectacular.

Sat 24th Sept: Today we return to Glendalough first visiting The Hill of Tara where St. Patrick challenged the local king by lighting the Holy Fire at the Easter Vigil. We also visit the 5,000 year old passage tomb at Newgrange in the Boyne Valley. The tomb is famous for its winter solstice illumination which lights up the passage and chamber at sunrise.

Sun 25th Sept:  Leave Gelendalough by coach for Dublin. Visit the Book of Kells exhibit and Library at Trinity College and the Museum. Afternoon free for exploring the city, shopping, enjoying great pub food or whatever takes your fancy.

Mon  26th Sept:  Gathering day in Glendalough. The group will meet to review the pilgrimage experience with some personal time and group discussion.
